Munich Security Network
Speech by Dr. Nikolai A. Behr on crisis communication in Munich

On 06 December 2019, the Munich Security Network held its final conference of the year. As part of the lecture series, Dr. Nikolai A. Behr informed participants about crisis communication. This topic is not only relevant to the IT industry. In particular, hacker attacks and security vulnerabilities can have serious consequences for affected companies.

To keep the damage as low as possible, preventive crisis training can be particularly helpful. In his lecture, Dr. Behr showed what different types of crises a company can face. However, if a company prepares for different scenarios in advance, the consequences can often be limited. A dedicated crisis team, together with appropriate communication training, is an important factor.

Crisis situations are delicate. Mistakes made during a crisis can have a particularly serious impact on companies. Therefore, it is important to identify possible risks and communication strategies in advance.

Crisis training simulates a realistic emergency and shows step by step how to act effectively rather than simply react. At the same time, key messages and communication goals are thoroughly examined and revised.

Interview and media training

Through various interview situations, participants gain the necessary routine and confidence. The central element of the exercises is always one thing: credibility.

Furthermore, the course of a crisis is simulated in realistic scenarios. How and with which messages can I reach all relevant target groups? How can I maintain a leading position in public communication during the crisis? And how can I emerge from a crisis with as little damage as possible?

Communicating confidently during a crisis

Through open feedback and the practical application of jointly developed messages and strategies, participants can learn to respond quickly and appropriately to crisis situations. As a result, they can remain confident and credible points of contact for the media, authorities, and the public.
